Grab Your Folding Chair

Texas has the worst voter turnout in the country. This is incredibly frustrating, especially considering how this state has the potential to flip an entire election. But that also means we can do something about it. As a community, it is our responsibility to do something about it. In the words of Shirley Chisholm, “If they don’t give you a seat at the table, bring a folding chair.” And we need to come together and get a line of folding chairs out the door.
Our voices matter. It’s not enough for folks to just chant “Black Lives Matter”, but then we aren’t seated at the table when we are discussing these issues that matter to our community. It’s not enough to say that we applaud diversity but there is no equity in the diversity discussion. It’s not enough to say that we want equality when you look around the room and the people making the decisions look like everybody else. And we are still knocking at the door of a table that was prepared for us.
The Black Community is an instrumental part of the democratic party, and it needs to start being recognized as one. The election this March is our chance to vote for representatives who will fight for that reality. And we cannot afford to miss this opportunity.
