Texas Coalition of Black Democrats Call for Immediate Action to Stop Police Aggression in Black Communities

Gene Collins, President of the Texas Coalition of Black Democrats, joins the nation in mourning the loss of Black life at the hands of law enforcement and the Dallas law enforcement officers killed last night. The tragic deaths of Alton Sterling and Philando Castile further shows that our law enforcement and criminal justice systems are in immediate need of reform and the relationship between law enforcement and the Black community is in desperate need of repair. According to a study being released today by the Center for Policing Equity, the use of police force is disproportionately high for African Americans – more than three times greater than for whites. Further, Black men between the ages of 15 and 34 are five times more likely to be killed by police officers than any other demographic.

“Over the past eight years we have witnessed a political and national dialogue that celebrates blatant racism and sensationalizes the disrespect of culture, life and liberty – which Americans have begun to accept as cultural norm. This culture breeds hatred and fosters violence.

Today, we are beyond frustrated and angered by the cycle of police aggression and violence in black communities. There is a barbaric culture within law enforcement that perpetuates the disproportionate use of force with African American citizens, and that must come to an immediate end.

We challenge all Democrats, Republicans, and Independents alike to create a new level of dialogue, civility and respect around this topic of police brutality and the African American community.

The Texas Coalition of Black Democrats will be working with our chapters throughout the state to engage in a demand to end this cycle of police aggression and begin repairing relationships with law enforcement. We will use President Barack Obama’s report on 21st Century Policing and legislation aimed at remedying racial profiling as guides for policy and social change. Once finalized, the Coalition will organize locally to advance these demands with police departments throughout the state and at the Texas Legislature next session.

Finally, we are deeply saddened by the ambush attacks that left five police officers dead and seven others injured. We send our prayers and thoughts to all of the families affected in this week’s killings.”
